How Trading Tournaments Work: A Complete Guide
How a PnL World trading tournament works, from entry to the final bell: formats, equal bankroll, live-market execution, the risk-adjusted score and rating.
A trading tournament is a competition in which traders trade the same markets, over the same period, from the same starting bankroll — and are ranked by one score at the end.
Every tournament on PnL World follows the same rules. This guide walks through one from entry to the final standings, and explains the parts most contests leave vague: how orders are filled, how the winner is decided, and what a result is worth afterwards.
1. Pick a format
Tournaments run on a fixed schedule in several lengths. The name tells you the length and the market — for example Daily · Crypto or Monthly Major — October 2026.
| Format | Length | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly | 1 hour | fast reads, short-term setups |
| 4-Hour | 4 hours | a full intraday setup |
| Daily | 1 day | trading the day's move |
| Weekly | 7 days | consistency across sessions |
| Monthly Major | 1 month | a flagship, long-horizon result |
| Quarterly Final | 3 months | the season's flagship |
| World Championship | 1 year | the crown — World No. 1 |
Entry stays open while a tournament is running, so you can join any format after it has started — even a Monthly Major in its last week.
There is also the Free Arena: an always-on practice table with no clock and no rating, where you can learn the terminal and start over at any time.
2. Join
Open Tournaments, pick a table and press Join. Each tournament page shows how many traders have entered and how the prize places are split.
- Same bankroll for everyone. Every participant at a table starts with the same virtual bankroll. The size of anyone's real account never matters.
- Minimum field. A tournament needs at least two traders. If fewer enter, it is cancelled and nothing counts.
3. Trade in the terminal
When the tournament goes live, the terminal opens: chart, order book, your account and an order ticket.
- Live market data. Prices come from live Binance markets — the same prices anyone can check.
- Exchange-style execution. Orders are executed by the platform's engine at the moment they arrive: market and limit orders, stops, take profit and stop loss, leverage up to the table cap. Market orders fill against the real order book, so large orders get realistic slippage.
- Fees and funding. Taker and maker fees and funding on perpetual positions apply as on an exchange. They are part of your result.
- Other traders' positions are hidden while the tournament is live, so nobody can copy the leader. Standings — places and results — are visible throughout.
4. How the winner is decided
Your place is set by one number, the tournament result:
- Return on your starting bankroll after all fees and funding, counting open positions as if you closed them right now (including the exit fee);
- divided by (1 + your maximum drawdown) during the tournament.
So two traders who both finish +10% are not equal: the one whose account never fell more than 2% ranks above the one who was down 30% along the way. A controlled path beats a lucky one.
Example. Trader A: +12% return, 4% maximum drawdown → 12 / 1.04 ≈ 11.5. Trader B: +15% return, 40% maximum drawdown → 15 / 1.40 ≈ 10.7. Trader A places higher.
At the bell, any open positions are closed at market and the final standings are fixed. If two results are exactly equal, the higher raw return ranks first, then the earlier entry.
5. After the bell: results and rating
- Standings are public and permanent. Every finished tournament keeps its final table — places, results, field.
- Rating points. Every rated finish adds points to your PnL World Rating (PWR) — the most for the top places — weighted by the format and the strength of the field.
- Your record. The tournament joins your trader card: a career record that builds over time.
6. Prizes
Prize pools are formed from entries, and the top places share them. During open testing, entries use test credits — no real money is involved, and tournaments award rating points and places on the World Rankings.
Tips for your first tournament
- Start short. An Hourly or Daily tournament teaches the terminal and the scoring quickly.
- Respect the drawdown. The score divides by it. A big loss early costs more than it looks, even if you recover.
- Fees are real. Very frequent in-and-out trading pays the fee every time.
- Try the Free Arena first if the terminal is new to you.
FAQ
Is this real trading? The market data is real and execution follows exchange rules, but positions are simulated: nothing is opened on an exchange and no real money is at risk.
Can I join a tournament that has already started? Yes. Entry stays open while a tournament is running, in every format.
What happens if I make no trades? You stay in the standings with a 0% result.
How many places are paid? It depends on the field size: about 40% of a small field (2 of 5), about 15% of a large one (75 of 500). The exact split is shown on every tournament page.
PnL World tournaments are simulated: trades are executed against live market data, but no real-money positions are opened on any exchange. Nothing here is financial advice.
