Why Trading Contests Get Gamed — and How to Stop It

All-in gambling, empty lobbies, extra accounts, edited results: how trading contests get gamed, and the rules PnL World uses so the rating cannot be farmed.

Any competition with a scoreboard attracts people who play the scoreboard instead of the game. Trading contests are especially exposed: the market is noisy, entries are often free, and results are easy to fake.

This article lists the common ways trading contests get gamed and the rules PnL World uses against each one. A rating is only worth something if it cannot be farmed.

Exploit 1: the all-in lottery

How it works. In a contest scored by raw return, the best strategy is maximum leverage on one big bet. Most who try it blow up; one wins with a huge percentage.

What stops it. Places are decided by return ÷ (1 + maximum drawdown), so a return bought with a deep fall in the account scores lower. A liquidated account ranks below every account that survived. Leverage is capped per format.

Exploit 2: farming empty lobbies

How it works. Win many tiny events against no real opposition and collect points for each "win".

What stops it. Every result is multiplied by field strength — the rating level of the opponents, the share of verified opponents and the size of the field. A win against one or two weak accounts brings only a small fraction of the format's points.

Exploit 3: grinding short events

How it works. Play dozens of the shortest events every day and let volume carry you to the top.

What stops it. Format weight. A Monthly Major win is worth forty Hourly wins, and a World Championship win ten Monthly Majors. Volume in short events helps, but the top of the ranking is decided by long formats.

Exploit 4: extra accounts

How it works. Open several accounts, run different strategies on each and keep the best one — or let accounts lose to each other.

What stops it. Verified to rank. Only traders who confirm they are a unique person appear on the public World Rankings: one person, one rating. Unverified accounts can play, but they cannot occupy a place on the board.

Exploit 5: edited or selected results

How it works. Report only the good results; crop the screenshot; edit the numbers.

What stops it. Trades are executed and results calculated by the platform, on live market data. Every rated result stays on the trader's record permanently — there is no way to delete a bad week. See verified trading track record.

Exploit 6: buying status

How it works. Pay for visibility and let visibility pass for rank.

What stops it. Rank cannot be bought. Account size, deposits and any paid promotion have no effect on the PnL World Rating; every trader at a table starts from the same bankroll.

Exploit 7: copying the leader

How it works. Watch the leading trader's positions and copy them in real time.

What stops it. Other traders' open positions are hidden while a tournament is live. Standings are visible; positions are not.

What we don't publish

Some anti-abuse checks only work if their exact thresholds are not public. The principles above are published; detection details are not. Results that break the rules can be reviewed after a tournament.

FAQ

Why can't I see other traders' positions? So that nobody can copy the leader during play. Closed trades become visible to participants after the tournament ends.

PnL World tournaments are simulated: trades are executed against live market data, but no real-money positions are opened on any exchange. Nothing here is financial advice.
