Most Profitable Trader vs Best Trader: Not the Same Thing
Why the most profitable trader is not always the best trader: account size, luck and risk distort profit. How the PnL World Rating (PWR) measures skill instead.
"Who is the most profitable trader?" and "who is the best trader?" sound like the same question. They are not. Profit in money mostly measures how much capital someone had and how much risk they took. Skill is something else.
Why profit misleads
| Distortion | Example |
|---|---|
| Account size | +1% on 100 million is a million; +100% on 1,000 is 1,000. The first trader "made more", the second traded better. |
| Risk taken | Two traders both made +30%; one risked the whole account to get there. |
| Survivorship | The traders who blew up stopped posting. You only see the winners. |
| Cherry-picking | Best month, best trade, best screenshot. |
| One period | A great year in a bull market says little about the next. |
What "best" should mean
A fair measure of the best trader needs:
- Equal conditions — same capital, same markets, same costs.
- Return, not money — percent result on equal capital.
- Risk control counted — losses held open must count; blow-ups must hurt.
- Many events — a career, not a lucky week.
- Strong opposition — beating good traders counts more.
- Verification — one person, one record.
How PWR measures it
The PnL World Rating (PWR) is built on exactly those rules:
- Every trader in a tournament starts with the same 100,000 Credits on the same live markets.
- Place = final result — return after fees and funding, with open positions counted at the mark price including the exit fee.
- A liquidation that leaves 10% or less of the bankroll ranks the trader last.
- Points = format weight × place share × field strength — bigger events and stronger fields count more.
- Points never expire; the World Rankings show verified traders only.
So the top of the PWR rankings is not the trader with the most money, but the one who finished highest, most often, in the biggest events against the strongest fields. See world ranking of traders.

FAQ
Who is the most profitable trader in the world? Lists of the richest traders measure fortunes, not trading skill under equal conditions.
Can a small trader be ranked above a large one? Yes. On PnL World everyone starts with the same bankroll; account size plays no part.
Is PWR a measure of real-money performance? No. It ranks competitive results in tournaments on live market data with simulated execution.
PnL World tournaments are simulated: trades are executed against live market data, but no real-money positions are opened on any exchange. Nothing here is financial advice.
